About Nagar District

District Brief

The Nagar District is bounded on the north and north-east by the Hunza District, on the south-east by the Shigar District, on the south by the Gilgit District, and on the west by the Ghizer District. Covering roughly 2,810 sq. kms, Nagar district also falls under montane grasslands and shrublands ecoregion, defined by dry alpine zones & permanent snowfields with glaciers, with patches of alpine meadows and alpine scrub. The districts does have zones temperate coniferous forests on the foothills of Rakaposhi. Significant area of the district is covered in snowfields and permanent glaciers. Overall the district has less than 2% land under forest or tree cover (including farm forests and plantations), with 10% of the land covering alpine and winter pastures. Less than 1% of the land is used for agricultural and settlement purposes. About 87% of the remaining land area is either barren or permanently snow covered.

Avian Diversity

About 263 bird species are found in the district, with the highest number (138 species) being Passeriformes (perching birds). This group mainly covers a variety of flycatchers, finches, warblers, corvids, buntings, redstarts, larks and pipits. The district is also home to waterfowl during passage, with no less than 16 ducks & geese species, 26 waders, 9 gulls & terns, with more than 21 species of crakes, grebes, egrets and herons. In terms of predatory birds there are up to 17 hawks & eagles, 4 vultures, 7 owls and 4 falcon species in the region. Other birds in the region include 6 pheasant and 6 pigeon & dove species, with some woodpeckers, swifts and others.
